The Galloway School strives to create a warm, inviting, safe and rich environment for students to grow as readers and writers. Our English Language Arts curriculum is based on our Early Childhood foundation and continues to be enriched with each grade level. The core subjects, reading and writing are taught using a workshop model written by a well-known and highly respected educator, Lucy Calkins. Word Study is conducted through whole group and small group settings which allows the student to learn about and effectively use sounds, letters, and words. Students perform and demonstrate higher level thinking through rich conversation during whole group discussion and receive individualized learning opportunities during small group instruction. Students participate in literacy stations and engage in differentiated and challenging activities to help them reach their personal academic goals. Teachers use the Benchmark Assessment System to adequately identify a student’s current instructional and independent reading level.
