Mary Alice Salinas
I taught myself at the age of four to read by sitting on the edge of my bed using the windowsill as my desk. My readers were the Sears and JC Penny catalog. I should have known that I would want to teach.
I will be teaching 5th, 6th, and 7th grade English Language Arts at Galloway School. I graduated from the University of Houston Main Campus with a Bachelor of Arts in Nutrition and Interior Design (Home Economist). A few years later I decided to become a teacher and did Post Baccalaureate classes at University of Houston Clear Lake Alternative Education and became certified as a Bilingual and ESL teacher.
I taught for the University of Houston Early Childhood Project, owned my own Mexican Restaurant, taught for the Houston Independent School District, for several years and then joined the Pasadena Independent School District. I was a Peer Facilitator and wrote Writing Curriculum. I taught almost every grade level for over 32 plus years. I retired a few years ago and as life and God would have it, I joined the Galloway School three years ago.
I am a native Texan and have always lived near the coast, in my youth near Corpus Christi and now near Galveston. I am a wife, mother, Grammy, and teacher. I have two children, a daughter and a son that grew up in Houston and went to A& M University and University of Houston. They have married and gone on to establish their own families, my son has two sons that are the love of our lives.
I am grateful and privileged to be able to teach your children. I am looking forward to this new school year and to be able to make a difference. My goal for them is to help them achieve their passions and dreams but most of all to guide them to become global, tolerant citizens for I realize that none them belong to us but to the world.
